Puppies

Puppies are SUPER! They grow with the family and are a pleasure to train. However it takes time, effort, facilities and skill to develop your dog. If you do not have the time or skill for proper puppy development a started or trained dog may be the answer. If your decision is to have your dog trained we encourage our customers to return their dogs to vom Kervinshof for training rather than risk placing your dog with someone unfamiliar with this breed and its characteristics. The results of such a match are often disastrous for you and your dog. Whatever your choice it should be the correct one for your situation.

We offer German registered brown and black roan puppies from sires and dams that have been officially certified to breed by German standards. Every dog listed on the pedigree has met the same performance and conformation standards through decades of selective breeding and testing. This insures our customers are receiving healthy puppies that have a sound genetic history of coat, conformation and proven performance. Each puppy is well socialized with daily human contact and has been exposed to bird wings, water (weather depending) and lots of exercise. They have been wormed, vaccinated and given lots of hugs. This is a dog of German quality that you can certainly be proud to own and his performance will astonish you. A five-generation pedigree is furnished rating all ancestors as physically sound and accomplished hunters. Puppy Selection Process

A deposit is required to reserve a puppy in your name. The order of deposits received on a particular litter will be the order of puppy selection. If you plan to pick up your puppy (we encourage you to do so) it is important that you arrive on the prescheduled date and time so the order of selection may be maintained. If you are unable to arrive as scheduled or you would prefer to have your puppy shipped we will make the selection for you in the appropriate sequence.

It is important to note that we can seldom look into the future and predict the sex or color ratio of advertised litters. Therefore, if the specific color or sex of a puppy is not available your deposit is moved to the next available litter. There is little difference in the litters we breed as all of our litters are bred to the same standard and our breeding sires and dams are of the utmost quality. When your request is specific to color and sex it may take a little longer to honor your request but be assured we will make every effort to do so. Once we receive your deposit for a puppy we try to keep you updated by keeping our website current. However, we are dependant on the webmaster for updates and many times there is a waiting period. Our daily schedule is rather hectic and we are slow at times responding to telephone calls especially during the hunting season and trips to Germany. E-mails are the best avenue for a timely response to any questions you may have.

NAVHDA: vom Kervinhaus Kennel

If we do not have a pup or trained dog available we strongly recommend a dog from our daughters North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association Kennel “vom Kervinhaus” Michele has chosen NAVHDA as the preferred organization for her kennel and the testing of her dogs. In her opinion, NAVHDA is less political than other options and like most hunters the dog and not politics or ego is the priority. NAVHDA is very similar to the German testing system and offers hunting tests, training assistance and membership opportunities. Many owners of German registered dogs register and test their dogs with NAVHDA. Michele, maintains the same top quality lines of German bred dogs that we do and she has tested her dogs in the German system and qualified as a judge of versatile hunting dogs when she was at the tender age of twenty.

Male or Female? Other than sex, color is generally the only major differences between pups in the litter. Most hunters usually dont have a strong preference. A working dog is the goal. Males are generally harder hunters, larger in size, stronger and possess more stamina, but are territorial. Females are usually more sensitive, close workers, require less training time but come into season twice a year, occasionally during hunting season. If you are thinking about a female and want to spay her because you do not have the proper facilities during her heat cycle the better choice is probably a male. It is critical this quality female not be accidentally bred to Fido living next door. One of my most frequently asked questions is, How do you select the best pup from a litter? The first and most important point to consider when choosing a pup is genetic; focus not so much on picking a pup, but pick litters. Genes determine the reaction of a dog to its environment and the soundness of its conformation. Genes are the building blocks of heredity and are passed predictably from parents to offspring; therefore, picking an experienced breeder with proven brood stock and a reputable history of producing successful dogs should be part of your agenda. Positive genetic traits, accompanied by soundness and health, should be the goal of your purchase. Inherited gundog traits are really what you should be looking for. Pups change a great deal in personality almost on a daily basis, the energetic one on Monday maybe the sleepy one on Tuesday. Some of the greatest Drahthaars ever produced were the ones that didnt stand out in the litter as a pup. The same can be said of famous race horses like Seattle Slew and Secretariat but in the right hands with the right genes they can reach the mountain top. So much for the pick of the litter.

vom Kervinshof males are 25 inches tall, 60 to 80 pounds and females are 23 inches tall, 50 to 70 pounds. The coat is short, thick and medium to heavy. Beard and eyebrows designed for all terrain and weather conditions. They have excellent temperaments, are stable and calm, and confidently adaptable to family and kennel surroundings. Strong pointing instincts with industrious field and water searches within gun range is to be expected. The nose should be considered excellent and this more than any other single factor determines its use as a hunting dog. They possess a strong Natural desire to hunt and their overall cooperation in the field, duck blind or home is exceptional. Our dogs want to do your bidding, which curtails the problem of hunting more and enjoying it less, because your dog is frustratingly difficult to control.

There aren't any Cheap Dogs, you can not substitute quality
Any professional breeder will quickly tell you it takes knowledge
, experience, dedication and a sizeable investment to breed
quality dogs. Puppy mills and backyard breeders cover
the landscape and many buyers fall victim to their advertisements,
in time the buyer discovers it wasnt so cheap after all. Our
strain produces dogs with emotional stability and a high level
of intelligence making them a pleasure to train. They learn
multiple techniques at a very early age and will challenge
your creativity in training, this allows them to become a finished
dog before the age of two and a trusted family companion for
years to come.

Replacement Policy and Kennel Facility
The kennel facility is modern, with isolated concrete runs cleaned and disinfected daily complete with septic system. Our dogs are fed a high quality diet, regularly wormed with current vaccinations. Training grounds are complete with bird pens and ponds for early puppy exposure to upland game and waterfowl. Our dogs are guaranteed to be selectively bred, healthy, well- socialized and quality hunting companions. I personally know of too many hunters who purchased dogs from puppy mills or other unsanitary backyard breeding conditions that arrived in ill health, died, were gun shy, too aggressive, poor hunters or carried diseases to their new home. A free replacement policy may exist if certain requirements are met for a significant condition that prevents the dog from performing its hunting duties not created by the owner. We cannot guarantee every dog will achieve breeding certification under strict German standards.
